In ihrer gemeinsamen Ausstellung bei after the butcher setzen sich Mathilde ter Heijne und Norbert Witzgall mit Aspekten und Konzepten des Nicht-Sichtbaren auseinander.
Ter Heijne untersucht soziale, kulturelle, politische und ökonomische Hintergründe gender-spezifischer Phänomene innerhalb verschiedener Gesellschaften und Kulturen und deren geschichtliche Entwicklung. In der Ausstellung bei after the butcher zeigt ter Heijne erstmalig Ergebnisse aus ihrer langjährigen Zusammenarbeit mit dem Voodoo-Priester Togbé Hounon Hounougbo Bahousou innerhalb des künstlerischen Kontextes.
Norbert Witzgall malt. Er reflektiert Konventionen von Malerei und Fotografie am Beispiel des Porträts. In seiner neuen Arbeit verwendet er Röntgenaufnahmen von Gemälden. Fotografie – hier als Grundlage der wissenschaftlicher Untersuchung von Malerei – wird erneut transformiert in Malerei.
Witzgall’s Malerei wird in der Ausstellung wiederum zur Projektionsfläche digitaler Bilder ter Heijnes. Bilder, die während einer Reise der Künstlerin nach Togo und Benin mit einer Infrarot- und Aurakamera (mit Hilfe von Daniela Macé Rosiger) entstanden sind. Auf diese Weise überlagern und verbinden sich subjektive, wissenschaftliche, und spekulative Formen der Bildproduktion.

Krome Gallery has a new space in Luxembourg, opening with an exhibition by Mathilde ter Heijne in dialogue with Marina Abramovic. „In dialogue with“ is a new series of exhibitions initiated by Krome Gallery to explore the affinity between a mid-career artist of the gallery and his/her conceptual reference. For the opening of the gallery’s new location in Luxembourg, Krome Gallery has invited Mathilde ter Heijne whose work is well-known for questioning different forms of performative gender politics. Her installations, video, sculpture and performance pieces have been exhibited in major international institutions such as MOMA PS1, New York; The Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich; and the The Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. Among the artist’s creative inspirations is Marina Abramovic, a performance artist who began her career in the early 1970s and whose work explores the relationship between performer and audience, the limits of the body, and the possibilities of the mind. The exhibition will feature a selection of works by Mathilde ter Heijne, put in context with a seminal piece by Marina Abramovic. Simultaneously new works by Mathilde ter Heijne will be shown at Krome Gallery Berlin (Potsdamer Straße 98, 10785 Berlin).

Mathilde ter Heijne works mainly in the media of video, performance, sculpture and installation. In her work, she frequently deals with issues of gender and ritual practices. What will be represented and what not? Who will gain access to the larger process of writing history and who not? And how could these frames of reference and representation be subverted?
Mathilde ter Heijne’s ongoing project Woman to Go (since 2005) consists of a series of postcards showing portraits of anonymous women dating from the beginning of photography to the 1920s. On the message side of the postcards, biographies of other, more prominent women of the time can be read, whose lives evidently and at the same time ambiguously collide with those of the women portrayed in the pictures. The documentation of events that have been insufficiently documented and represented becomes the focal point of the work. Identity is what is at stake here and it only seems to become a freely disposable product – ready „to go“.

Mathilde ter Heijne’s art investigates gender-specific phenomena in different cultures. She reflects historic developments and current trends and questions socio-cultural, political and economic connections. What shapes gender identity and how does this, in turn, shape society? What is regarded as normal and how can social structures be changed? By means of artistic transformation, of as well the past and the future, the exhibition explores various possibilities of modifying and dissolving gender roles and associated structures of power. Ter Heijne has produced new works with a pronounced regional reference yet international basis for the Freiburg show: Woman to Go is a continuing series of post cards that links photographs of unknown women with the biographies of well known, but often forgotten women who lived between 1840 and 1920. This association creates scope with which to look at and interpret history anew. The work Experimental Archeology transforms prehistoric finds into a modern-day context. Corporeality and gender are initially made blatantly obvious and ultimately transcended in this work. The work It will be! engages with the roles of Freiburg residents from the most divergent cultural backgrounds and their connection with the handcraft sewing. The work came about in a communal project comprising a total of two hundred sewn individual items. The space created by the project within the exhibition will be utilised and designed during the course of the show by students from the Anthropology and Gender Studies Department of the University of Freiburg. Thus it will become a site for debate, exchange, individual narrative and networking. A monthly programme will provide more detail of respective events. Each of the works has come about in cooperation with the numerous partners of the museum. The aim is to recognise and tap into the potential for change by means of a communal, collective process. An artist’s book will be published to accompany the exhibition.

From 3 October 2014 to 8 February 2015, Singapore Art Museum presents in one space three co-curated exhibitions focusing on the nature of the image as explored in the art of photography and new media. Immediate, accessible, and mutable, photography and the moving image, as key contemporary practices of visual culture, are highly democratic mediums. Since the turn of the last century, unprecedented developments in the way that the image is created, circulated and consumed, have led to new ways of representation and even new image genres.
Organised and co-curated by SAM, the three exhibitions at the museum are in partnership with the Singapore International Photography Festival, Deutsche Bank, and the Yokohama Museum of Art respectively. In Afterimage: Contemporary Photography from Southeast Asia, artists use non-traditional photographic techniques to articulate concerns about the cultural, political and social landscapes of the region. In Time Present: Photography from the Deutsche Bank Collection, the works of renowned international artists show the multiple possibilities of photography in history over time. Image & Illusion: Video Works from the Yokohama Museum of Art Collection features experimental new media works that expand their subject matter beyond the limits of the medium and representation. As an artistic construction, the image is never self-evident or transparent, but instead always manifests the particularities of history, and the weight of its own time.

Once again this year, Berlin Art Week will be complementing the programme of the main partners – the fair formats and major art institutions – with a select group of initiatives chosen by a jury. Among numerous project spaces and alternative initiatives that operate independently of the larger institutions, nine were chosen that offer a widely varying artistic spectrum both in terms of their content and geographical location, showing the diversity of the Berlin art world. The jury members for the third Berlin Art Week are the artist Mathilde ter Heijne, the art critic Kolja Reichert, and Anna-Catharina Gebbers, a curator and lecturer.

„Die Ästhetik des Widerstands“, 1975, 1978 und 1981 in drei Bänden veröffentlicht, gilt als das schriftstellerische Hauptwerk von Peter Weiss. Der Roman entwickelte sich in den 80er Jahren zum Kristallisationspunkt politisch-ästhetischer Diskussionsveranstaltungen und wurde angesichts seiner außergewöhnlich breiten Rezeption auch als „letzter gemeinsamen Nenner“ der Linken bezeichnet. Eine der zentralen Thesen des Romans von Peter Weiss ist, dass sich durch die Auseinandersetzung mit Werken der bildenden Kunst und der Literatur neue Modelle für die politische Aktion und für ein Verständnis des Sozialen entwickeln lassen. Mit der Ausstellung und dem begleitenden Programm zur „Ästhetik des Widerstands“ in der Galerie im Turm wollen wir die dem Roman zugrunde liegenden Themen in der Gegenwart neu verorten und der Frage nachgehen, inwieweit die in Peter Weiss‘ Roman aufgestellten Thesen für das künstlerische und das politische Feld auch heute noch Gültigkeit haben.

The One Minutes is pleased to announce its new series for 2014 which includes „They have come to escort me on the dangerous pathway of the intermediate state“ by J&K, a contemporary artist duo, based in Berlin and Copenhagen. The One Minutes is a global platform for moving images. Since 1999, The One Minutes has produced and distributed over 10.000 video works from makers of 120 different nationalities. This unique network has largely been built by former students of the Sandberg Instituut. The One Minutes has its base in the institute and is involved in most of the video projects. They offer a platform for international exposure via screenings and exhibitions.
In „They have come to escort me on the dangerous pathway of the intermediate state“, J&K are exploring the theme of death and rebirth in connection to the collapse of a system and the aftermath of revolution. Specifically, J&K would like to pose the question of how death or destruction of prevailing structures can be regarded as a state of potentiality that may lead to new creation. For this series J&K have invited artists and, in collaboration with The One Minutes, they have set out an open call to invite artists to respond to the project.

In the course of more than five decades, the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen has become one of the world’s most respected film events – a place where filmmakers and artists ranging from Roman Polanski to Cate Shortland, from George Lucas to Pipilotti Rist have presented their first films. Oberhausen has managed to instigate various political and aesthetical developments, for instance through the Oberhausen Manifesto, perhaps the most important group document in the history of German film. Careful programming and a pioneering choice of subjects has helped the Festival to build up its exclusive position in an increasingly unpredictable market.
Olaf Stuber’s „Videoart at Midnight Edition“ will present N° 9: Ming Wong KONTAKTHOPE, 2010 (May 2); N° 13: Mathilde ter Heijne LAMENT, SONG FOR TRANSITIONS, 2014, (May 3); N° 12: Shingo Yoshida ERROR, 2013, (May 4); N° 11: Andy Graydon VOSTOK, FARETHEEWELL, 2011, (May 5). Each work will exclusively be installed for one night in the Studio Cinema of the Lichtburg Film Theatre.
